When Holland America Line welcomes ms Koningsdam to the fleet in February 2016, the ship will debut a new era in design approach for the line. As the first ship in the Pinnacle class, the 2,650-guest ship will have an interior that blends a fresh, contemporary styling in perfect harmony with the line’s renowned classic elegance.
Pinnacle means “high point”—and the debut of Koningsdam is a high point in Holland America Line history. Then again, in many ways, Koningsdam has been 141 years in the making. As heir, she’ll carry forward all of the tradition, nautical heritage, and signature service and style for which Holland America Line is known—while raising the bar for 21st-century elegance.
Her name sets the tone. Its roots, like the ship itself, are a mix of something contemporary and something classic: “Koning,” means king in Dutch—and is a salute to King Willem-Alexander, the Netherland’s first king in more than 100 years. And “dam,” because, after all … this is a Holland America Line ship, and the "dam" naming convention dates back to 1883.
Light-filled spaces. Fluid curves. A sophisticated interplay of high technology and elegance. With beautiful architectural elements inspired by music. All woven together in a forward-thinking design approach to create an interior that blends a fresh, contemporary styling in perfect harmony with Holland America Line’s renowned classic elegance.
The story of the ship will unfold online over the coming months through vibrant renderings, engaging videos, ship facts and more details about the interiors created by Adam D. Tihany and Bjørn Storbraaten.
With a sophisticated colour palette and the freedom to design from the ground up based on guest feedback, ms Koningsdam’s staterooms and suites feature a host of modern functional details such as bedside USB ports, along with custom casework and frameless glass shower doors that feel luxurious and upscale.

At the heart of the ship, Koningsdam’s central atrium is pure visual drama. Soaring three decks high, the space is graced by an airy stainless steel sculpture that evokes the feeling of a classical quartet, with strings, arches, and bows. And, like music itself, it changes as you move around it, so that no two perspectives are quite the same.
The atrium is capped by a ceiling that serves as a backdrop for subtly changing high-definition projections. Look up by day to see wispy cirrus clouds floating overhead or perhaps soothing colors of water and light. By evening, the atrium takes on dramatic lighting hues or reflects the clear constellations of the night sky.
Queen's Lounge
The iconic Queen’s Lounge has been completely re-imagined along the lines of a strikingly elegant theater. Now spanning two floors, the Queen’s Lounge will host the popular B.B. King’s Blues Club, showcasing the sounds of Memphis performed by an eight-piece brand. If you can’t resist the dynamic energy of these world-class musicians, you’re in luck—the Queen’s Lounge boasts the largest dance floor on the ship, a response to requests from guests.
By day, the beautiful room hosts presentations, speakers, and other activities, and can also accommodate special entertainment events. And following the evening’s entertainment, the Queen’s Lounge transforms yet again, into a late-night dance club fueled by state-of-the-art sound and special LED lighting effects.
